A Walk up Hound Tor, Dartmoor, Devon - 24th August 2020
We go for a walk on the tor that is said to have inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles" - Hound Tor, between Bovey Tracey and Widdecombe in the Moor. We also poke around the nearby remains of the Mediaeval village of Hundatora, abandoned around 1350AD, until the weather kicks off in classic Dartmoor style and completely lashes on us as we trudge back to the car park. We also have lunch in the Tom Cobley in Spreyton, before heading back home the next day.

Abandoned toilets behind the Providence Chapel
The outdoor toilet with the best view in Dartmoor
A path to the back door of the chapel
A bee does its thing amongst the flowers
A bright yellow flower
Isobel peers in a window
Doug the Dog roams around
Doug chews up something he shouldn't
Across the car park near Hound Tor
Hound Tor
Doug's on a long lead
A craggy Dartmoor tor
The boys head off into the rocks
Fred and Harry stick their arms out in the wind
A view over Dartmoor
More irregular granite piles
Isobel and Harry
Matt and Doug Dog
We have a picnic in the rocks
Heading back down
We head off around the back of the tor
Misty bracken
A solitary figure on the tor
A tangled tree
This pile of rocks looks a lot like Donald Trump
Doug threads through the bracken
Purple heather
A misty view of Hundatora
Fred in the old village
We roam around Hundatora
Harry and Isobel
The kids survey the scene
Harry looks out
More purple flowers
The boys inspect a cave
Dartmoor ponies
A grey pony
On the tor
We head back to the car park in the lashing rain
Fred stands around in the rain
Harry is extremely wet
Doug frisks about near the car park
We dry out in Gradnma J's lounge
There's a very low rainbow over the valley
The end of the rainbow
The old Spar in Chagford has moved
A traditional Devon traffic jam, with sheep
Sheep in the lanes
Isobel looks around St. Michael's in Spreyton
A nice bit of old church roof in St. Michael's
A half-thatched cottage
The path is littered with post-wind branches
Isobel walks through Spreyton
The legendary Tom Cobley Tavern in Spreyton
Back on the path to Chapel Park
Harry outside Grandma J's
The Spreyton Village Shop
Fred and Harry hang around on the fence
Harry and Sis wait outside the village shop
Fred checks the ice-cream freezer
The tower of St. Michael's
Harry on the fence, and a view of Dartmoor
The three hares of Spreyton
On the road to the village
Harry hangs around outside Grandma J's care home
We wait for Grandma J's appearance
Mother sits at a Covid-safe distance
Harry hands over gifts, like an offering to the gods
Harry and Isobel check out the Cobley's menu
Harry gets a truly massive sausage
The boys play cards
In the Cobley's back restaurant
Isobel and Harry under a load of beer mats
Harry's got ice cream for pudding
An empty table and a range of Covid posters
There's a nice-enough sunset
Mother's bedroom
A last view from Grandma J's house
On the link bridge over the M3 at Fleet Services
Harry has a sponge burger at Fleet services
The M3 is busy again
Harry on the link bridge over the M3
Lime green at the top of the stairs
Harry eats a chip
In a very lime-green staircase
Fred is masked up
A nice old Morris Minor in the car park at Fleet
Boris - Stripey Cat - looks up
A wasp nest has to be dealt with
The East Anglian Air Ambulance clatters over
A paramedic ambulance roars down the Eye road
