The most ambitious DIY project yet commences
Eye Karate Kamp, Southwold Harbour, Suffolk - 6th July 2024
Harry's karate club is doing its annual camp-out at the harbour campsite in Southwold, although he's broken an arm and so can't do karate at the moment. Despite that, Isobel and Harry head over on Thursday night to set up, whilst Fred and Nosher head over on Friday afternoon. Harry might as well have stayed at home as he spends most of his time on his tablet, although to be fair most of the Saturday is spent in the van/awning hiding out from some torrential rain. In-between the lashings, we do end up walking into Southwold and doing the arcades for a bit, before we bumb into the rest of the karate group at the Red Lion. The rest of the club heads off looking for somewhere to watch the football, but end up with us in the Harbour Inn, where we've stopped for food and drinks. Before that on the Saturday morning, there's a rare chance to walk around Black Shore Quay at eight in the morning, where it's almost deserted, just before Isobel heads off to go and see Robbie Williams in that London, and afterwards Nosher and Harry are in Norwich for a follow-up x-ray on Harry's broken arm.

The patio awning project commences
Fred roams around a wet campsite
The van and its awning
A view of the rain
Parts of the site look a bit gloomy
Black Shore Quay is deserted early in the morning
The ferry hut is surrounded by water
A Truckman top has been abandoned
The melted roof of Mrs T's chip shop
Fisherman's huts on Black Shore Quay
The rebuild of Mrs T's seems to have stopped
A lone traffic cone
A slipway is blocked by broken wood
Fishing boats undergoing restoration
A destroyed yacht
A pile of derelict fishing boats
Another derelict fishing boat
Another look at the remains of Mrs T's chipper
A pile of fishing detritus
A view of Southwold lighthouse over the marshes
Walberswick, across the river
A couple of cyclists roar past
There's a giant bracket fungus on a tree
Harry scoffs a cheese sandwich in the van
It biblically rains again
We hide out from the rain in the awning
We walk up Ferry Road past the Sail Loft
Lifeguards are out, but it's not really the weather
Southwold Pier in the rain
Fred and Harry look at the sea
We're on the 2p coin shoves again
Fred in the Southwold Pier arcade
The arcade is obviously where it's at
Fred goes retro with a game of Pac-Man
The boys do a Tim Hunkin Under the Pier contraption
An obligatory view of Southwold from the pier
Jabba: The Hut
A beagle sits on the sea wall
We catch up with the karate club at the Red Lion
Fred in the Red Lion
Harry and Fred
The bar of the Red Lion in Southwold
The karate club gang outside the Red Lion
An impressive castle/church on the common
Fred points out plantain on Southwold Common
Harry scopes out the menu in the Harbour Inn
The Harbour Inn's reception
We look out over the common at the Harbour Inn
A view of Southwold in the gathering gloom
There's a small rainbow over Southwold
Harry looks like he's being electrocuted
Harry in front of the Harbour Inn
Another wall of rain moves in from Walberswick
A nice clinker-built boat is restored
A boat is reflected in a puddle
There's a baby rabbit near the van
Harry does his thing: spend time on a tablet
Harry waits for a bacon bap in Norwich market
We eat giant bacon baps on Gentlman's Walk
Someone's totalled the wall opposite Hartismere
