The repaired Boosey cornet
A Walk to the Crossways Inn, Scole, Norfolk - 21st April 2024
We decide to try out another "walk to a pub" somewhere, and settle on Scole, just over the border into Norfolk. It seems reasonable on the map, and turns out to be even shorter than expected - certainly it's much nearer than the Hoxne Swan. Upon arrival, we try out the Scole Inn, but it's gone totally Hotel now with no real bar - just a couple of restaurant rooms that look like they're set up for breakfast or something. So we ditch that and return to the actual pub that is the Crossways Inn for a nice pint of beer in the garden. Before that, Isobel's buying circus tickets, then Nosher is in the garage resoldering a couple of joints on a Boosey cornet that dates from the end of 1900 - nearly 124 years ago - as part of a basic restoration. The cornet was returned by the granddaughter of a former Gislingham Silver Band player who used to play with the band in the 1950s.
