A Trip to Orford Ness, Orford, Suffolk - 16th August 2022
It's been on the cards for ages, and the boys and Isobel have already done it, but finally Nosher sorts out a trip to Oford Ness - once the top-secret home of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, where atom-bomb triggers were tested, and also once the home of radar research and various weapons ballistic tests. We get the ferry over from Orford Quay, after a quick visit to Pinney's smokehouse shop, and poke around on the Ness, via the Radar Receiving building and up to the Bomb Ballistics building.
next album: Art at The Bank, Eye, Suffolk - 17th August 2022

Harry and Fred on the quay at Orford
A river trip comes in
Our National Trust ferry returns from the Ness
Harry stands on a rust anchor
There's a load of crabbing going on
The river boat Tilly is moored up after a trip
We head off to Orford Ness
An rudder from Rochester looks like a whale tail
The AWRE pagodas of Orford Ness
The Ness's shallow lagoons have dried out
Fred takes a photo of the cracked earth
The remains of an MOD fence
The boys poke around in the information centre
An old 'Blue Danube' atomic bomb
Harry sits on an old chair
An experimental bunker
The boys roam the red route
All that remains of an old Nissen hut
A toilet sits in the remains of an old building
Harry and Fred try to get electrocuted
We visit the book shop
An old electrical substation
There's a pile of timber where a building was
More abandoned electrical gear
Looking out towards the Cobra Mist radar test site
Harry and Fred on the Bailey bridge
We visit the Bomb Ballistics building
The remains of a bomb target in the shingle
The boys try out some high-quality binoculars
Under the bonb ballistics building
Old railway tracks in the concrete
One of several dead tiny deer
We walk back down the red route
The Ranger's building
A sheep visits the book shop
Some olf research building
An old shower and a big concrete tank stand
Harry roams around the post-apocolyptic landscape
The cracked earth
Wooden fences surround the path on the Ness
A bunch of Toppers get ready for a race
Orford Quay from the ferry on the way back
A boy sails a Topper across the river
A War-memorial stone
Boys hurl themselves into the River Ore
There's a nest of House Martin babies
Some ducks waddle over
Ducks peck at Fred's shoes
