Taken from the eastern end of the grave, the dismembered parts of a sheep or goat were also found near the warrior's feet. This photograph shows how well the bones were preserved in the ground which will greatly aid further study. The horse was approximately 14 hands high. This image is shown together with an illustration showing the layout of the skeletons and some of the other contents of the grave. (total 43k jpg)
The excavation of the grave commences: the horse's head can be seen appearing. Traces of green staining on the horse's head indicate where some of the harness fittings were found. Looking on is Andrew Tester of the County Council Archaeological Service and Sergeant Bill Harris, Base Historian for the USAF. (38k jpg)
